Graphic Design Colleges

If you have decided that a career in graphic design is right for you, an excellent first step would be to get a degree in your desired field. Many employers are looking for people with experience, and a degree shows potential employers that you have the skills they are looking for. There are many graphic design colleges and schools offering a wide range of degrees and certificates. So how do you choose which program is right for you? To begin your path towards an exciting new career, here are some tips to help you enroll in a graphic design college.

When researching particular programs, the most important thing to do is ask questions. A lot of information can likely be found on the school’s website, but consider calling the admissions office or, if possible, going to campus to meet with an adviser so you can ask questions not directly answered by the website.

If possible, do not limit yourself to just one or two graphic design colleges during your research. Research all of the schools offering the program or type of degree that interests you. This research will give you a better idea about what schools can and should offer students, and you will be better prepared to pick the right graphic design college or school to help you meet your career goals.

Here are some general questions you should consider for each school you are researching. Keep in mind that there may also be additional questions you should consider, which may pertain to your particular situation and educational goals.

  • What does the program cover?
  • What are the admission requirements?
  • What software/equipment does the school use? How up to date is this software/equipment?
  • What is the average class size?
  • Are the teachers experienced and knowledgeable in their subjects?
  • What is the rate of employment after graduation?
  • How will this program prepare me for a career in this field and what can I expect to know after completing the curriculum?
  • What ties to the industry does this school have?
  • Does the school offer career planning, career guidance or job placement to graduated students looking for work?

If you do not think you can fit traditional schooling into your busy schedule, do not let being unable to attend on-campus classes stop you from achieving a graphic design degree. Your best option might be to enroll in an online program. You should ask the same questions listed above for the online programs that interest you, and you might want to add these additional questions to the list:

  • How much time do I have to complete the program?
  • Are professors regularly available to answer questions and provide assistance via e-mail or chat programs?
  • What is the structure of the online classes?
  • What are the similarities and differences between the online program and the traditional program?

With an online program, you want to be sure you are comfortable with the computer-based format and course pacing. Some online classes allow students to complete work at their own pace, while others have strict weekly or bi-weekly deadlines that cannot be completed more quickly. In addition, because you are not face to face with the professor, you want to be sure you can still get in contact with someone if you need assistance. Finally, the online program should not be that much different from the traditional program so take full advantage of the curriculum.

Graphic design colleges and schools offer a wide variety of programs and options. With this invaluable education experience, you will be well on your way to a fulfilling career in the graphic design industry.
